Philosophy Essays and Papers

This selection of essays and papers has arisen from my undergraduate studies in philosophy at UNSW. The topics span a wide variety of traditions (including Analytic, Continental and Eastern philosophy) and fields (including epistemology, moral philosophy, 20th Century European philosophy, philosophy of religion, and philosphy of biology).

Probably my favourite essays here are the following three:
  • 'The Gettier Problem' - I analyse two approaches to this central problem in contemporary epistemology and expound my own views on the nature of the problem itself.
  • 'Hume's 'On Miracles'' - An analysis of Hume's classic argument about miracles, including the problems identified by others and myself.
  • 'Kant as a Consequentialist or Utilitarian' - Kantian ethics and consequentialism/utilitarianism are often portrayed as rival theories, but here I look at the possibility of Kant being incorporated into a consequentialist or utilitarian framework.
The only essay here on Eastern Philosophy ('Pictures of Harmony') won the UNSW Dennis Balson Chinese Philosophy Award in 2006.
